“Montmartre is a large hill in Paris’s 18th arrondissement. Montmartre is primarily known for its artistic history, the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur on its summit, and as a nightclub disctrict. The other, older, church on the hill is Saint Pierre de Montmartre, which claims to be the location at which the Jesuit order of priests was founded. Near the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the twentieth, during the Belle Epoque, many artists had studios or worked in or around Montmartre, including Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissaro and Vincent van Gogh.
A little known treasure in the 18th arrondissement is the minuscule private vineyard of a monastery, perched high on the hill of Montmartre. Vines have grown in Montmartre since at least 944, when viticulture was first attested in the area. The vineyard you see today was created by the City of Paris in 1933 as a way of stopping real estate developers from purchasing the land. Prior to the creation of Clos Montmartre, the 0.15 hectares of land had been used as a children’s playground and dumping ground, among other things. The first ‘Harvest Festival’ of Montmartre was held the following year, in 1934.” (source: Wikipedia)
